Summooo Time – Family Holidays

Punishment or Pleasure?

We all remember those family holidays when we were kids. All the family together for that one getaway of the year that you all absolutely have to attend and of course, nobody forgets anything, dad’s never shouting at the kids and there are definitely no arguments…..if only that was the reality, but sadly, it isn’t. It’s always an early start to get everything (including the kids) ready. Preparation of the passports is essential as you really don’t want to be the one to forget yours (we all know somebody that’s done it), then there’s getting to the airport, through security and onto the plane keeping everyone in check, which feels impossible. By the time you can relax, you feel like you’ve been in a whirlwind. At this point everything should run fairly smoothly and you can have a great time. However, you may find yourself wishing you’d just had a UK Summer holiday, which is a different ball game entirely…..

Summering in the UK

A UK family holiday is always great fun. We get away generally to the coast and see some of the beautiful scenery, something we seem to forget even exists in the UK these days. So we pack up the car to the max, squeezing in every last item you think you’ll need (but realistically you know you’ll never use), squash the kids in the back with the rest of the luggage and off you go. Why then, no matter how close you think you live to your destination, does it always take 10 hours to get there?! We have the answer. It starts with the angels in the back and consists of car games such as eye spy, which becomes incredibly mundane after about three turns, but the game continues….forever. Toilet breaks are the next thing. We have a saying at Lancashire Farm when it comes to long car journeys and that’s ‘you’re only as strong as your weakest bladder’. No matter how long you can keep going for, there’s always someone you need to stop for and if you have more than two, well, good luck. But after all that time, deep breathing and probably a great deal of restraint, you reach your destination and the relaxation, good times and real family bonding can begin. At the end of the day, these holidays are what memories are made of.
